Who chooses breast reduction?

Many women see Dr. Stanley P. Gulin at Plastic Surgery Associates of Naples-Fort Myers because of the physical discomfort associated with very large breasts. In addition, they would like to enhance the overall appearance of their breasts, which are pendulous and sagging. Many women suffer from breast enlargement starting in their teens and early 20s, while many will develop breast enlargement following pregnancy or menopause. The breast is usually too large in proportion to the woman’s frame with back, neck, and shoulder pain being caused by the weight of the breast. Women complain of irritation under the breasts as well as indentation in their shoulders from tight bra straps. Most women find physical activity difficult because of the size and weight of the breasts. Occasionally women suffer from a difference in size of the each breasts making it very difficult to fit into a bra.

Many women see Dr. Gulin because they are self-consciousness about the size of their breasts. They are limited in their physical activity as well as the type of clothes that they can wear.

Because of the medical reasons associated with performing breast reduction, this procedure is often covered by a patient’s insurance.

About the procedure

Breast reduction is performed by Dr. Gulin in his state of the art on-site fully accredited surgical facility located in Naples, Florida, or at one of the medical centers at which Dr. Gulin maintains surgical privileges. Surgery is performed either under twilight sleep sedation or general anesthesia, depending upon the size of the reduction.

Surgery involves incisions which reduce the size of the skin and breast. Without removing the nipple areolar complex from the breast

it is relocated to a higher position on the breasts. In addition, the breast is secured in a higher position onto the chest muscle. This gives a much more youthful appearance to the breast with the breast being sculpted to be in proportion to the patient’s body frame.

Most breast reductions involve incisions around the areola, the midline of the breast, and underneath the breast. These incisions usually go on to heal very well, particularly the incision around the areola and in the midline of the breast. Our on-site permanent makeup artist is able to apply micro-pigmentation to the areolar incision to blend it even more into the surrounding skin.

Because of the type of breast reduction that Dr. Gulin performs at Plastic Surgery Associates of Naples-Ft. Myers, the nipple is left attached to the rest of the breast so that sensation is maintained as well as the ability to breast feed.

After the procedure

Most people having breast reductions by Dr. Gulin at Plastic Surgery Associates of Naples-Ft. Myers, return to their usual work approximately one week following surgery. Activity is limited for several weeks. The breasts may have some bruising or swelling, which may last up to one to two weeks. Women go into a comfortable bra the day of surgery.

The final result is a breast that is cosmetically very appealing and of proportionate size. Most women are able to breast feed after the procedure and undertake all forms of physical activity.
