Who chooses a breast lift (mastopexy)?
Many women see Dr. Stanley P. Gulin at Plastic Surgery Associates of Naples - Fort Myers because of their concern over the loss of the youthful shape and firmness of their breasts. These changes result
from the loss of skin elasticity often following pregnancy, breast feeding, weight changes, and aging. Many women, even at an early age, find that their breasts are sagging and do not have the cosmetic appearance that they desire. In addition, clothes that are form fitting are difficult to wear.
Often women see Dr. Gulin not only to have their breasts lifted but at the same time to have a breast augmentation (enlargement) so that the breasts are firmer and more shapely as well as larger.
About the breast lift procedure
Surgery is performed by Dr. Gulin in his fully accredited in-office surgery facility located in Naples, Florida. Surgery is usually performed under twilight sleep sedation anesthesia.
Surgery involves tightening of the skin overlying the breast. Excess skin is removed and the nipple-areolar position is raised. Incisions depend upon the amount of excess breast tissue. Often an incision only around the areola is needed. Occasionally an additional incision in the midline of the breast is necessary. Both of these incisions heal very well and after a few months are difficult to see. The incision around the nipple-areolar complex can also be blended into the skin by our in-office micro-pigmentation specialist.
If desired, the breast can also be enlarged using a submuscular implant. The implant can either be an FDA approved silicone gel filled implant or a postoperatively adjustable saline implant (Spectrum implant by Mentor Corporation). This implant allows the size of the breast to be increased following the surgery for a period up to six months.
After the breast lift procedure
Most patients return to usual activity in about one week following their surgery. Full exercise is resumed in about three weeks following surgery. There is mild bruising to the breast, which resolves in about two weeks. Nipple sensation is usually retained as well as the ability to breast feed. A bra is worn night and day for about two months.

Clothing is much easier to wear because the breast basically has the same shape in or out of a bra. If an implant has been added the breast is not only more shapely without sagging but also larger. If a postoperatively adjustable saline implant has been used the size of the breast can be adjusted for several months following surgery. |
